Ever since the Selenium Boston conference in June 2013 (where it was announced that Selenium 3.0 would be released by that December), I've been eagerly awaiting its arrival.

However, year after year rolled on afterwards, and each Christmas I felt like I’d gotten a big piece of automation coal in my stocking. I’ve been going to the SeleniumHq downloads section every day and refreshing hoping to see it. I finally got to hear the latest update on Selenium 3 from Simon Stewart, Selenium Project Lead and inventor of WebDriver, the main Selenium contributor on a recent Applitools webinar.

Here’s What You Need to Know about Selenium 3

Ever get a gift on Christmas like a pair of socks? Sure, socks are useful and you need them but do you really get excited about them? That’s what the Selenium 3 announcement was like for me.

It turns out the only real change to Selenium 3 is that they’re removing the original core implementation. They’re not making any other API changes. If you’re currently using the current Selenium API, you’ll be fine.

Selenium 4 will be the standardized version of JSON protocol.

That’s it.

I’m not trying to minimize this awesome achievement by all the Selenium contributors; all I’m saying is that for most users Selenium 3.0 should be a non-issue for their existing frameworks when they upgrade to it.

When will Selenium 3.0 be Released?

Simon has always said that Selenium 3 would be released around Christmas time, but he reminded everyone that he never said which Christmas. So, since he’s making this announcement now, I assume that it will be available sometime between now and December.

I’ll let you know as soon as it is released — so stay tuned.
