About TestGuild

Why TestGuild Exists

Independent since 2010If you're tired of vendor marketing dressed up as testing advice, you're in the right place.

TestGuild is independent media for QA engineers, test automation architects, and testing leaders who want straight talk about what actually works in real CI/CD environments. I don't sell a testing tool. Sponsors pay for reach, never for a verdict.

If you're tired of vendor marketing dressed up as testing advice, you're in the right place.

I started this in 2010 as a solo blog because I couldn't find honest, practitioner-focused testing content that wasn't secretly a sales pitch. Sixteen years later, that's still the whole point. We cover test automation, performance testing, security testing, and how AI is actually changing the craft. Not the hype version. The real version.

Resources for Automation Engineers

Look, there's no shortage of testing content on the internet. Most of it is either outdated, generic, or quietly funded by the tool it's recommending.

Here's what TestGuild does differently:

  • The TestGuild Automation Podcast — 600+ interviews with the engineers, architects, and framework creators actually building the tools you use. Running since 2014. Longest-running podcast dedicated entirely to test automation. [Listen →]
  • Automation Guild — the annual online conference for automation engineers, now in its 10th year. Not a vendor showcase. A practitioner event. [Details →]
  • The TestGuild Newsletter: weekly testing insights direct to your inbox. 41,000+ subscribers can't be wrong. (Or maybe they can. But they keep opening it, so.) [Join →]
  • TestGuild IRL. In-person meetups where testers in the same city actually talk to each other instead of typing at each other. [Upcoming cities →]
  • Tool Matcher. A free tool that helps you narrow down testing tools based on your actual stack and constraints. [Try it →]

How TestGuild Remains Independent

Vendors sponsor podcast episodes, webinars, and events. That's the business model and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Here's the line I hold:

  • Sponsored content is labeled as sponsored every time.
  • Sponsorship buys access to the audience. It does not buy a recommendation.
  • I've had direct competitors on the show in the same month, and I'll keep doing it.
  • Tool Matcher doesn't rank by who pays. I've been asked to build it that way and said no.
  • If a sponsor's claim doesn't hold up, I'll say so on their own episode.

I don't sell a testing tool. I don't hold equity in one. That's what independent means here, and it's the part I can back up.

About Joe

Hi. I'm Joe Colantonio, founder of TestGuild.

I spent 25+ years in software testing including a long stretch as a Test Automation Architect at a Fortune 100 company. In late 2019 I left corporate to run TestGuild full-time. Best decision I ever made. Terrifying at the time. Worth it.

Before software testing, I wanted to be a rock guitarist. Seriously. I went to Berklee College of Music chasing that dream. It didn't pan out  turns out the rock and roll lifestyle wasn't exactly what I'd imagined. But what I loved about music the constant learning curve, the creativity, the need to improvise when things break translated perfectly into test automation. I've been breaking things on purpose ever since.

I've interviewed 589+ automation experts on the podcast. I've run Automation Guild since 2017. I've got 25 years of real testing scars to go with the opinions.

I don't pretend to know everything. I'll tell you when something didn't work for me. I'll push back on vendor claims when the evidence doesn't add up. That's the job.
